In Chile, he has taught at the University of Chile and the Austral University of Chile; in the United States, at the University of California and Ohio State University. He has been a visiting professor at universities in Latin America and the United States. He currently teaches at the Center for Latin American Cultural Studies at the University of Chile, where he was director until 2010, and is a tenured professor in the Literature Department of the same university.
