Mexico. Professor in the Department of Performance Studies and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at New York University (NYU). Her notable publications include Theatre of Crisis: Drama and Politics in Latin America (1991), a book that won the New England Council on Latin American Studies Best Book Award and Honorable Mention for the Joe Callaway Prize for the Best Book on Drama; Disappearing Acts: Spectacles of Gender and Nationalism in Argentina’s Dirty War, (Duke U.P., 1997); The Archive and the Repertoire: Performing Cultural Memory in the Americas (Duke U.P., 2003), a book that won the ATHE Award for Excellence in Editing General Volumes on Theatre Practice and Pedagogy and the Modern Language Association's Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize for the Best Book on Hispanic Literature and Culture (2004). She has edited several volumes of critical essays on Latin American and Latina/o performance. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2005 and an ACLS Fellowship in 2013. Recently elected Vice President of the MLA, she will serve as President in 2017. She is the director and founder of the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics, supported by the Ford, Rockefeller, Mellon, and Luce foundations, among others.
