Novel and Nation in 20th Century Chile
Literary fiction and identity

This book has been written from a political and theoretical standpoint that, while conceiving of the strengthening of national identities as desirable and necessary, does not adhere to any nationalism, much less to the blood-based and pre-modern versions that have come back into vogue in recent decades. The national utopia that encourages it is made up of autonomous individuals who imagine themselves consciously and lucidly, that is, knowing that they imagine themselves; of individuals who are solidary and build permeable, inclusive communities that are open to change; of critical individuals who foster permanent discussion and reformulation of their identity.
