Germany. Philosopher and theologian known especially for his reflections on the analogy of being, impacting Catholic and Protestant theology. He was a ‘freelance writer’ in two senses, for the Jesuit journal Stimmen der Zeit in Munich. He was not a university professor, and only taught in academic settings, invited by a colleague to his chair. In another sense, he was a ‘freelance writer’ because he did not affiliate himself with any school of thought other than the public theology of the Church. Apart from his lyrical writings, which are mostly unpublished, the three major genres of his writings over half a century show an uncommon unified coherence. In order to reissue some of his works, Balthasar divided them into: religious writings, philosophical-religious writings, and Analogia Entis.
