The author presents a journey through the main benchmarks and theories that underpin his methodological and philosophical proposal. In this way, Rheinberger demonstrates the relevance and necessity of incorporating philosophical and historical tools that allow science to be understood beyond its logical or social components. For him, the task of historical epistemology consists precisely in analyzing science as a human activity, composed of diverse technical and conceptual complexities, practices and means, methods and questions, which in their assembly configure “epistemic and experimental systems” with a life of their own. This approach not only allows scientific knowledge to be seen as something dynamic and in constant transformation, but also allows knowledge to be situated in the liminal space of the certain and the uncertain, the known and the unknowable, the necessary and the possible.

Hans-Jörg Rheinberger
Germany. Born 1946, Liechtenstein. Philosopher and historian of science. He has focused his research on the technical and historical analysis of scientific experiments and knowledge production spaces. He was director of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin (1997-2014), where he developed his theory of “experimental epistemic systems.” His epistemological approach highlights the uncertainty, creativity, explorative, and material nature of sciences, building bridges between the humanities and sciences, as well as between applied arts and experimental sciences. Among his most notable works are his German translation of Jacques Derrida's *Of Grammatology*, *Toward a History of Epistemic Things: Synthesizing Proteins in the Test Tube* (1997), *Iterations* (2005), and his most recent book, *Spalt und Fuge: Eine Phänomenologie des Experiments* (2021), in which he proposes a materialist phenomenology of scientific experiment.Related books
