The origins of social policies in Chile, 1850-1879

Were social policies developed in nineteenth-century Chile? Do we have recognizable evidence that part of the work of the nineteenth-century Chilean state was to implement social policies in the fields of health and education? What impact and results did those broader-coverage social policies have? These are some of the questions that Oscar Mac-Clure's study sets out to answer through the examination of a vast qualitative and quantitative documentary repertoire, which includes the debate on various foundational issues such as the formation of the post-colonial state, the genesis of public administration processes, and the relationship between private and public institutions that collaborated in the implementation of those policies in Chile.
