Catholicism, Public Space, and Political Opposition. Chile 1986-1989
This volume joins three that preceded it. One of them, which selects texts from the bulletin We cannot remain silent (1975-1981), and two that correspond to Policarpo for the periods 1981–1983 and 1983–1985. On this occasion, the publication's reflections and chronicles primarily take place in the final years of the military dictatorship. This period spans from the failure of efforts to shorten its duration, carried out through various strategies deployed by different opposition groups (social mobilization for some, mass popular rebellion for others), to the plebiscite where the citizenry rejected General Pinochet remaining president for an additional eight-year term. It also covers the first presidential and parliamentary elections after the 1973 coup d'état. In the ecclesiastical sphere, the period is marked by Pope John Paul II's visit to Chile in 1987 and the policy of reconciliation encouraged by the Vatican and the Archbishop of Santiago, Juan Francisco Fresno.

During 2022 and 2023, the “Political-Religious Interventions in Dictatorship” Study Group of the Institute of Theology and Religious Studies (ITER) at Alberto Hurtado University was composed of Stephan Ruderer, Enrique Rajevic, Boris Hau, Raquel Fernagni, Carlos Álvarez s.j., Diego García, Marcos Fernández Labbé, Soledad Del Villar, Martín Bernales, and Blanca de La Fuente. It also benefited from the indispensable work of Mauricio Canals, who conducted the research that enabled the footnotes forming the critical apparatus of this volume, and Alejandro Cisternas, who meticulously transcribed the selected texts. Marcos Fernández Labbé, Soledad Del Villar Tagle, and Diego García Monge were the coordinators of the Study Group and are the editors of this volume.

Marcos Fernández Labbé
Chile. Doctor of History from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He has published numerous articles related to the prison experience in Chile, policies regarding the fight against alcoholism, and the origins of drug consumption and trafficking in Chile. He currently works as a professor for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the Department of History at Universidad Alberto Hurtado and at the Institute of History at PUC, teaching and researching contemporary historiography and topics related to the history of Chile, particularly the early years of the Vicariate of Solidarity. In 2010, he published *Bebidas alcohólicas en Chile – Una historia de su fomento y expansión, 1870-1930* (Alcoholic Beverages in Chile – A History of Their Promotion and Expansion, 1870-1930), Ediciones Universidad Alberto Hurtado. He has also published multiple articles on the relationship between Catholicism and politics in Chile and Latin America during the second half of the 20th century.Maria Soledad Del Villar Tagle
Chile. Holds a degree in History from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and a Master's degree in Contemporary History from Universidad Alberto Hurtado. Currently pursuing a Master's degree in Theology at Boston College, USA. Her academic interests focus on the relationship between religion and politics in the contemporary world, from both historical and theological perspectives, as well as feminist and women's histories and theologies. She is part of the Interdisciplinary Program on Memory and Human Rights at UAH. She is a columnist for the website Territorio abierto and a collaborator for Mensaje magazine.Related books
