Eight years after the withdrawal of the Syrian army, it is still not possible to reach a final conclusion about the autonomy that Syrian Kurds have created in northern Syria and have managed to expand by integrating Arab regions liberated from it thanks to Kurdish units. The loss of Efrîn in 2018 and the occupation of Serê Kaniyê and Tal Abyad in 2019 by Turkey have triggered an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe among Syrian Kurds. Hundreds of thousands of Kurds, but also Christians and members of other minorities, have been displaced. Thousands have died in the fighting.
