«Andean Movement: Dances, Bodies, and Repertoires in the City of Ignacia Cortés.
This publication explores the intersections between dance, affect, and social mobilization, reconstructing the experiences of those who use dance as a way to inhabit the political. Our guests will discuss this recent publication.
In her research, Ignacia Cortés writes a history of Andean movements recounted as acts of defiance: that of migrants in the eighties who brought Andean music and dance repertoires into urban neighborhoods; the squatters in the nineties who opened vacant and dilapidated houses, fostering a blend of gutter hardcore-punk chords with the rhythm of the tinku; and finally, the defiance of those in the 2000s who continue to teach that dance steps allow one to evade tear gas and hunger, embody memories, and invoke utopias.
