Commemoration | International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances.

Commemoration

On December 21, 2010, the United Nations General Assembly expressed concern over the increase in forced or involuntary disappearances in various regions of the world. For these reasons, and because it is a practice that was bitterly carried out in different parts of the planet during the 20th century, they decide to declare the August 30 as the International Day of Victims of Enforced Disappearances.

In Chile, groups of victims' families and the human rights community commemorate it as the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances. During the period of civic-military dictatorship experienced in our country, it was a systematic practice used by the Military Junta and its repressive agencies to eliminate those they considered «internal enemies.».

The concept of «memory» has been coined in such a way that it is one of the pillars on which respect for human rights is built. The exercise of «memory,» however painful it may be, is essential to guarantee, in a certain way, a future of justice and dignity for all.

On the other hand, the work of research allows us to get closer to telling a truth that brings us closer to that past, to that exercise of memory, a past that we often want to forget.

For this reason, our publishing house includes a wide range of publications in its catalog that deeply investigate memory, human rights, and recent history.
