The cult image and all the ritual practices that unfold around it will mark the life of the Latin American Church. This reality was quickly assumed by the colonial Church, which from the second half of the 17th century onwards would actively promote the cult of images that miraculously appeared to the indigenous and mestizo population. For its part, Latin American theology of culture will highlight these indigenous roots and the iconic and festive character of local Catholicism. Pope Francis himself will insistently highlight the theological value of this faith that flourishes on American territory.

Federico Aguirre Romero
Chile. Associate Professor at the Faculty of Theology and Associate Researcher at the Center for Religious Studies of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. He trained in linguistics and cultural studies in Barcelona, and studied theology and Byzantine painting in Athens. His research focuses on the relationship between art and the experience of the sacred, the theology of the image in the Christian East, and Latin American popular Christianity. In addition to publishing a number of articles on these topics, he is the author of the book “Art and Theology. The Renaissance of Icon Painting in Modern Greece,” published by Ediciones UC.Related books
