Chilean social Catholicism
Development, Crisis, and Current Events

The expression “social Catholicism” designates the Church's response to poverty and social injustice in the 19th century. As a concept, the expression has continued to the present day. The formal origin of the Church's social doctrine, represented in the first encyclical Rerum novarum (1891), should be considered part of that broader ecclesial process, which reflects the evolution of Catholic conscience and sensitivity to the issue of poverty and its causes. The present collective work offers a variety of approaches to the subject. The papers focus on the Chilean case, taking into account the Latin American context.
