What were the institutions and voices of Chilean society that debated drug use in Chile? How has the drug been viewed from a historical perspective? In what way has it evolved from dangerous to exotic, from a criminal perspective to a sanitary one? What are the symbolic burdens that society has assigned to it? When reviewing the constitution of drug addictions and their practitioners, the distribution circuits of cocaine, morphine, and marijuana, and when noticing the dynamics of regulation and criminalization of their consumption, the impression remains that what was said and done on the matter was tied to or sought to annex itself to other phenomena, other practices, other social groups. Through the reconstruction and analysis of these and other events, this book explores a series of historical processes that unfolded in 20th-century Chile around the drug market.

Marcos Fernández Labbé
Chile. Doctor of History from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He has published numerous articles related to the prison experience in Chile, policies regarding the fight against alcoholism, and the origins of drug consumption and trafficking in Chile. He currently works as a professor for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the Department of History at Universidad Alberto Hurtado and at the Institute of History at PUC, teaching and researching contemporary historiography and topics related to the history of Chile, particularly the early years of the Vicariate of Solidarity. In 2010, he published *Bebidas alcohólicas en Chile – Una historia de su fomento y expansión, 1870-1930* (Alcoholic Beverages in Chile – A History of Their Promotion and Expansion, 1870-1930), Ediciones Universidad Alberto Hurtado. He has also published multiple articles on the relationship between Catholicism and politics in Chile and Latin America during the second half of the 20th century.Related books
