Contrary to what one might think, contemporary elites cannot be understood solely as a chain of familial ties. On the contrary, they constitute heterogeneous groups, with diverse educational and social backgrounds, in which discourses of merit, effort, passion, talent, ability, and resources are combined. Thus, through their discourses and actions, elites promote processes of renewal and reproduction, in a complex web of relationships, structures, and networks, in which education plays a fundamental role. Understanding current elites and the role they play in contemporary educational systems in Chile and Latin America is the great challenge.
