It is not easy to find in Chilean literary history a narrator who understands his time in such a complex and consistent way as Manuel Rojas, and that wisdom is born from the variety and intensity of his life experiences. The man who writes these stories is someone who knows hunger intimately, the arbitrariness of hierarchies, the hardness of rock, but also the creative possibilities of literary fiction and its ability to articulate human communities.
Manuel Rojas, then, appears to us as a plural subject. He inhabits various times, knows various places, and has been various subjects. The writing of his stories transforms this plurality into a space that offers recognition to people from very diverse historical and vital backgrounds. In this, he coincides with the most pronounced sensibility of 20th-century Chile and also with a permanent aspiration of the modern project.

Chile. After a restless youth, he radically developed the writing profession in maturity. Among his works, the short story collections stand out Southern men y The criminal (which features his celebrated story “The Glass of Milk”), the novel Rail tip and various essay and travel books. His fundamental work consists of the four novels starring Aniceto Hevia, his alter ego. This tetralogy, titled Irredeemable time in its recent posthumous edition, comprises Son of a thief —perhaps the most important novel of 20th-century Chile—, Better than wine, Shadows on the wall y The dark radiant life. In 1957, he was awarded the National Literature Prize. He/She passed away in Santiago in March 1973.Related books
