Descriptions
One question could run through each of the more than fifty descriptions of modern art pieces that make up this book: why write, teach, or read about objects made centuries ago, in places and cultures that seem so distant to us? Distant Gazes reconstructs a possible answer based on the fascination, pleasure, and emotion that these works can evoke in the contemporary viewer, and the seduction and passions they exerted and awakened when they were produced or revisited throughout history. Written far from the centers where this art was produced or is currently exhibited, this book revisits, with freedom and intimacy, a non-canonical selection of paintings, prints, drawings, and sculptures created in Europe between the 15th and 19th centuries.
