Given that Chilean universities –places that traditionally housed intellectuals and academics– were intervened by the military junta and restructured in their meaning and function, one could not seek out knowledge generators and researchers there. NGOs emerged after 1978, filling this space and revitalizing academic research and social intervention. They were diverse in their institutional nature as well as in the actors, topics, and debates they developed. And not all those who were part of this group of social scientists had the same networks and reach, relationships with political parties, resonance, and even less so, the same positions on democracy and democratization.

Cristina Moyano Barahona

Chile. State Professor of History and Geography, Bachelor of Education in History and Geography (2000), and Master of Chilean History from the University of Santiago, Chile (2005). Doctor of History from the University of Chile, 2007. Her research interests and publications have focused on contemporary political history, particularly the history of left-wing parties, social networks, and political culture. She has taught at various universities and is currently a professor in the Department of History at the University of Santiago, Chile. In 2009, she published "MAPU or the seduction of power and youth. The foundational years of the myth-party of our transition (1969-1973)," Ediciones Universidad Alberto Hurtado.
