Social science is not a mere observer of reality. In its descriptive, interpretative, and explanatory operations, science is also performing a productive labor in a double dimension: it produces “scientific facts,” configurations that science accepts, and it produces “social facts,” realities external to science, all of which it accomplishes through a complex interweaving of elements, through a complex assemblage. That is the analytical perspective proposed in this book, which makes such an assemblage its object of study.
