The possible and the event

$14.000

“The event is not reduced in any way to its actualization as a fact; it overflows every fact and every actualization by the charge of possibilities it holds in reserve and by virtue of which it touches the very foundations of the world for the existing being. It does not merely realize a prior possibility, pre-sketched on the horizon of our surrounding world; it reaches possibility at its root and, consequently, upsets the entire world of the one to whom it occurs: it is not this or that possibility, but the “face of possibility,” the “face of the world” that appears to him changed. Or, to put it another way, an event does not solely modify certain possibilities within a worldly horizon that would remain, as such, unchanged; by upsetting certain possibilities, it reconfigures, in reality, possibility in its totality.
