We cannot remain silent
Catholicism, Public Space, and Political Opposition, Chile 1975-1981

The texts collected in this book are articles from the clandestine newspaper We Cannot Remain Silent, edited between September 1975 and January 1981. Its creators were a collective of grassroots Christian men and women led by the Jesuit priest José Aldunate (1917–2019). This magazine was produced clandestinely by a collective of Christian men and women who considered themselves “in constant birth.” By reason of their faith, the collective had the courage to risk their own lives to articulate a dissident political voice. The first issue of the magazine explicitly states that the “simple explicit proclamation of truth, taking on its risks but also its liberating efficacy is the task of WE CANNOT BE SILENT.” The members of the publication remain, for the vast majority, unknown to this day.
