This text proposes an intermedial approach to addressing this Latin American song based on a series of factors that would musically unify the region. To this end, the author details four foundational medialities of an authored popular song: lyrics, vocality, musical arrangement, and recording, and subsequently addresses three derived medialities: music video, cover art, and critical discourse. To exemplify this proposal, the text provides case studies referring to seven genres prevalent in Latin America in the nineties: nueva canción, fusion, countercurrents, pop-rock, punk, funk, and hip-hop.
