The book delivered to us by Juan Pablo González extends his previous studies on the history of Chilean popular music into a more recent past. Although a common “way of doing things” persists, more specifically musicological approaches to the material are emphasized here, with timely inflections toward the intrinsic analysis of languages. Temporal proximity allows him to interact with the protagonists of these processes and to include his own experience with them, in the certainty that the social runs through private memory. The choice of thematic cuts, the multiplication of observation points, and the alternative reliefs accorded to different phenomena and dimensions productively reconstruct the lush landscape of these musics, the social imaginaries it summons, its interaction with contexts, and its tensions and agreements.
