Bells and Bell Ringing in the Cathedral and Other Historic Churches of Santiago (1789 - 1899)

This study on historic Santiago bells reveals aspects related to national sound (both in its colonial and republican experience) and the social impact of bell ringing throughout Chile's history, linking its sound to concepts such as time, faith, power, celebration, the city, the public, and the private. With an extensive and meticulous bibliographic review, the author documents and analyzes the bell as an object, its manufacturing and installation in a particular temple, as well as the instrument's organology and the morphology of its ringing. He also provides a general review of the city's bell heritage.
