In December 2023, the Ministry of Education of Chile awarded the National Prize for Educational Sciences to Juan Eduardo García-Huidobro for his outstanding contribution to the country's education. He participated in various reform processes of the educational system in Chile and Latin America, particularly highlighting his contribution to the development of popular education and social justice, becoming a benchmark in the promotion of inclusive and equitable education.
This book contributes to addressing a topic that has not always had the centrality it deserves: the teaching and learning processes experienced in the classroom. It is an approach to the educational phenomenon from cultural history, which aims to understand the objectives sought by education and the mechanisms implemented to achieve them. At the same time, it attempts to empirically measure the concrete conditions in which these ideas sought to be applied and to foresee some of their possible results. The “quality” of this school was not evaluated by standardized test scores or its students“ access to the labor market, but by its capacity to achieve what its leaders expected of it: to ”transform" the population to support the new political project that was the republican state.
Through an enjoyable read, the author presents in this book the ten most significant cumbias of the Vikings 5 and undertakes an engaging ethnomusicological work that includes an analysis explaining the rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, timbral, interpretive, orchestration, and structural aspects that contribute to understanding the particularity of this musical group's cumbia.
The book concludes with the transcriptions, in musical score format, of the ten cumbias analyzed. The objective is for them to be reviewed not only by researchers or those interested in learning about the characteristics of the Vikings 5's cumbia, but also for them to be performed by national and international musicians.
People who knew Leonor Paz y Paz refer to her as a courageous, generous, and resilient woman with a positive and optimistic spirit. They describe her as someone who, with her voice and pen, and driven by immense determination, dedicated a significant part of her life to pursuing changes in the country, particularly in the realms of teaching and women's access to various social and cultural spaces. She was a teacher, journalist, activist, and writer, and her life speaks to the challenges and achievements of Guatemalan women who, like her, forged paths during difficult times. She is possibly one of the most prolific storytellers of the mid-fifties and the following decade, at a time when being a published woman writer was uncommon. In general, her works are dominated by social criticism, at times marked by the exaltation of those who recognize injustice and take a committed stance through their words.
This work examines the artistic output of a select group of contemporary artists, poets, and calligraphers who grappled with the problem of illegibility in art with particular acuity and sensitivity: Cy Twombly, Henri Michaux, Inoue Yuichi, Mirtha Dermisache, and Mira Schendel. Despite the artists' notable contextual and geographical distance—United States, France, Japan, Argentina, and Brazil—this analysis reveals points of convergence, resonances that invite us to perceive in them a shared way of exploring and conceiving writing.
