Contrary to what one might think, contemporary elites cannot be understood solely as a chain of familial ties. On the contrary, they constitute heterogeneous groups, with diverse educational and social backgrounds, in which discourses of merit, effort, passion, talent, ability, and resources are combined. Thus, through their discourses and actions, elites promote processes of renewal and reproduction, in a complex web of relationships, structures, and networks, in which education plays a fundamental role. Understanding current elites and the role they play in contemporary educational systems in Chile and Latin America is the great challenge.

Mediated by an exhaustive analysis of its dimensions, it confronts us with both its theoretical position and scientific phonetic evidence about our ability to speak, listen, understand, and therefore interact.

This book traces the history of police forces in Chile. It presents the trajectory of the different bodies that performed police functions from the origins of the Republic until 1927, when the current Chilean Carabineros police force was created. Within its pages, you will find serene officers and watchmen, gendarmes, detectives, and guardians, interacting in the streets with neighbors, criminals, or demonstrators; also with prefects, commissioners, and police officers with a literary bent who put their experiences, aspirations, and frustrations inherent to police work into writing; and with intendants, politicians, and journalists who dealt with and debated police matters.
This book invites reflection on ways to appropriate knowledge that, for over a hundred years, has been constructed heterogeneously, influencing our understanding of subjectivity and giving rise to grand theoretical frameworks with the potential to support and exclude what falls outside conventional discourse. It seeks, therefore, to return to the primary germ of psychoanalysis, the one that challenges normative convention and proposes —from a childish gesture— to re-explore, transform, utilize, and create one's own proposal, a particular reading, that transcends the limits of the theoretical object from which it is born and the territory where it is inserted, making use of a discipline external to psychoanalysis and elaborated with elements from the other side of the world —as is Japanese cinema— to think about certain phenomena that affect us as cultural subjects.

The history of Latin America's recent ruins is only just beginning to be written from the continent itself, by those who inhabit the territory and have lived the phenomenon of our irregular modernity. It is written through words, bodies, and images. It is not a static history but one in motion, like the ruins themselves, which are always in a process of material degradation, becoming a kind of second nature. This is shown in performative interventions that bring together body and matter, as well as in the poetry and popular graphics that write, scratch, and paint our cities, sometimes at the risk of their own lives. In this sense, this book, due to its diversity of places and times, its interdisciplinary and transversal approach, and its participatory and collective realization, is a great contribution to this history full of incongruities and paradoxes that makes our continent so singular and elusive.

This suicide, in fact, allows us to measure the distance between this novel and the homoerotic fictions D'Halmar has already written. Cat y The Smoke's Shadow in the Mirror they were basically elegiac texts that celebrated a primarily Platonic pederasty; they avoid overtly homosexual conflict and end without deaths, but with separations. In contrast, Passion and death..., as with other accounts of The hallucinated where homosexual conflict becomes evident (even if it remains unnamed), it inevitably ends in death, with the homosexual in the role of a sacrificial victim. It would be anachronistic to ask a Latin American writer from the 1920s for a different treatment of the subject, but, moreover, the outcome allows D’Halmar to reach different (and ideologically diverse) readers; in this regard, his ambiguous treatment of the subject is revealing Little oliveSometimes he describes the boy as a “viperous” calculator, attributing to him “the feline precocity of bohemians”; at other times, as a loving and honest being.
