Óscar Castro experienced a difficult childhood, marked by poverty and his father's abandonment, and throughout his short life, he knew family and personal precariousness. This novel, in its two sections, presents two awakenings of Roberto Lagos, a ten-year-old boy from Rancagua: the sexual awakening in the space of a brothel, and the intellectual awakening, first in the library and then at school. It is therefore by definition a bildungsroman: the plot centers on a character's growth based on their experiences, all with poetic and subtle language, a memorable novel.

The university selection device

The university selection web device

The book addresses the institutional apparatus established to select university applicants, investigating the underlying processes and networks that have shaped it over a 170-year history. It covers both public struggles and controversies, as well as the obscure institutional work of maintaining and repairing instruments and procedures, especially in the face of disruptions that have occurred. The text presents the tensions in the process, the role of experts and university authorities, and the changes that have taken place, seeking to explain phenomena such as the long tenure of the PAA, the continued use of a test as questioned as the PSU, and institutional inertia in undertaking changes. Finally, it raises questions about the future that is now opening up with the PAES.

Female Cadences: Music, Gender, and Sexuality

Low female cadences

What musical codes represent masculinity and femininity in early 17th-century opera? In what ways does sound contribute to the social organization of sexuality? How has a dualistic distinction between the masculine and feminine manifested in traditional music theory? How is the frequent depiction of female madness in opera explained? What strategies have women creators employed to transgress the conventions of a primarily male medium?

A little over thirty years after its publication and controversial reception, this foundational classic of feminist musicology acquires renewed relevance, inspiring us with its virtuosic conjugation of musical theory and cultural theory, and motivating us in the search for new epistemologies that consider the body, sexuality, emotions, and the construction of identities as fundamental elements of music history.

This Spanish edition joins those already available in several languages, such as English, Japanese, Taiwanese, Chinese, Korean, and French.

Political experiments

High political experiments

We live in an experimental society. From citizen projects to artistic interventions, the concepts of “experiment” and “experimentation” are frequently used to describe social processes and initiatives. Especially in the realm of public policy, a wide range of interventions on issues of public interest are categorized as “experimental.” However, it is often not made explicit what the experimental nature of these initiatives consists of or what their specific effects are. This book proposes a new analytical framework for understanding these political experiments, their scope, and consequences, illustrating three experiments carried out in Chile in the areas of health, transportation, and pollution.

The best Chilean journalism 2022

The best Chilean journalism 2022 WEB

For 20 years, the University Alberto Hurtado's Excellence in Journalism Award has selected outstanding journalists, editors, professors, and communication theorists to serve as pre-jury and final jury members, choosing journalistic works that go above and beyond: those that uncover causes, consequences, trends, what is happening, and what shows the seeds of what is to come. This book is a prime example of this: the texts contained herein, winners and finalists in the Written Journalism categories of Investigation, Reportage, Chronicle, and Interview, bring the hidden to light and use a flashlight and magnifying glass so we can clearly see what they want to hide from us or what we couldn't or didn't want to see.
